Creating a clearer path from first login to first value for a complex enterprise security platform.
Opal Security is an identity and access management platform that helps organizations securely manage and govern access across people, applications, infrastructure, and AI agents.
Product Design
Opal is a powerful enterprise security platform, but getting a new customer set up required navigating a complex onboarding process involving multiple teams, systems, decisions, and dependencies.
The existing experience made that complexity difficult to understand. My goal was to create a clearer path through onboarding—helping users understand what they needed to do, why they needed to do it, and what came next.
Mapping the system behind the experience

Opal’s onboarding process was complex, spanning multiple teams, steps, and dependencies. I spent significant time talking with stakeholders across the organization to piece together how onboarding actually worked, mapping the process end to end and using that understanding to redesign the experience into a clearer, more intuitive path for users.
DESIGN PROCESS
Once I understood the onboarding process and the dependencies behind it, I used a few core design principles to guide the redesign:
01 — Make progress visible
Users should always understand where they are and what's left to do.
02 — Separate complexity from the user
The underlying system can be complicated without requiring users to understand all of it.
03 — Make dependencies explicit
Users shouldn't have to guess why something is required or what happens next.
04 — Guide users toward the next meaningful action
Instead of presenting everything at once, the experience should create a clear path forward.
